A 62-year-old West Islip psychiatrist has been sentenced to 6 months in jail, 850 hours of community service and a $ 1,000 fine for overbilling Medicaid by exaggerating the amount of time he spent with Medicaid patients.

The psychiatrist, Dr. Simon Sanchez, appeared yesterday before Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Kenneth K. Rohl. He was jailed April 12 after pleading guilty to the crime of offering a false instrument for filing in the second degree, according to a news release from the Office of Special Prosecutor for Medicaid Fraud Control.

Sanchez previously returned $5,000 of improperly obtained Medicaid funds, the statement said. His professional corporation, Simon Sanchez P.C., was fined $ 5,000 after pleading guilty to offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, the statement said…
